Machinist

General Description

The EDM Machinist at General Stamping & Metalworks is charged with the responsibility of productively performing subtractive manufacturing processes to produce high quality production parts, machine components and tooling on machining centers.

 

This job description is intended to be an overview of primary responsibilities for this position. All employees are charged with providing assistance in generally similar duties when management deems it necessary.  Special projects and activities may also be created where employees’ talents can best be utilized. In addition, General Stamping & Metalworks is a growing organization responding to an ever changing market It is expected that tasks and requirements will change from time to time and employees will be asked to respond as needed and within reason.

Organizational Relationships and Authority

Machinist reports directly to the Tooling/Machining Supervisor.  There are no direct reports to this position.

Key Responsibilities

The primary responsibility of the Machinist is to productively produce high quality parts on GSM EDM centers.  The standard for all equipment and tools used at GSM is that they perform as if they are new.  Therefore it is expected that all Machinists participate in maintaining equipment, tools and their work environment.  The Machinist will participate to perform to the objectives set for the department as well as:

 

  • Safely execute job responsibilities using proper PPE
  • Measuring precision tolerances using a variety of measurement devices
  • Blue print reading
  • Programming at the machine control
  • Setup and operate mechanical and CNC machining centers to production standards
  • Reading job travelers and complying with work instructions
  • Machine tooling fixtures, dies, molds and parts to print specifications
  • Collecting product inspection results as required by inspection standards
  • Entering data to accurately complete transactions
  • Participating in continuous improvement initiatives and projects
  • Communicating and maintaining the safety, quality and cleanliness standards set for the department

Job Demands and Expectations

All employees at General Stamping & Metalworks are expected to update job knowledge on an ongoing basis by identifying and participating in functionally related educational opportunities. The company may require additional training as new equipment and technologies are introduced to the department.

Qualifications and Competencies

To perform this job successfully, an individual must possess excellent manufacturing skills, be able to produce parts free of defects, be a dependable member of our team, and maintain an optimistic and supportive attitude. The individual will also maintain competency with the following programs and equipment:

ERP

  • Computerized Machine Controls & Programming
  • Desktop computer
  • Office telephone system
  • Machining Center
  • Mills, lathes, drill presses
  • EDM Equipment

Written Communication: English language both written and verbal understanding and reading comprehension sufficient to complete all job tasks.

Quality: Consistently produces parts to quality standards. Accurately checks parts to insure conformance to standards.  Uses all inspection tools effectively.  Accurately completes all other job tasks, including reading work orders and prints, recording information, labeling of parts, etc.

Productivity:   Consistently achieves or exceeds set up efficiency standards.  Consistently achieves or exceeds production efficiency standards.  Prioritizes tasks effectively, exhibits good work habits, and handles information flow efficiently.  Is consistently on work tasks during all work times.

Education

  • Minimum High School Diploma or GED
  • VMC or CNC Technical Training (Preferred)

Experience

12 months related experience

  • Able to speak clearly and understandably, with  a pleasant tone of voice and manner
  • Ability to hear within a range that enables normal telephone communication
  • Able to see a computer screen within reasonable reading distance without strain
  • Able to type at a keyboard without bodily or psychological discomfort.
  • Ability to ambulate around the manufacturing floor comfortably in order to complete tasks required for this position
  • Ability to lift parts up to 55 pounds.
